PhD Scholarship: Machine Learning and BCI for Surgical Skill Evaluation

The research group MediCIS/LTSI (Modeling Surgical Skills) belongs both to the University of Rennes 1 and the INSERM public national research institute, and is located at the Medical Faculty of Rennes. The group studies methods for understanding, modeling and assisting surgical skills. The methodologies include machine and deep learning, computer vision along with ontologies. The group includes both computer scientists and surgeons. Main applications are surgical training and assistance.

INSERM and LTSI / University of Rennes 1 is looking for a 3 year funded PhD candidate on Machine Learning and BCI for Surgical Skill Evaluation. The research lab is collaborating with the new surgical training center which recently acquired a platform with research capabilities. The research project aims to study quantitative metrics for various surgical skills from physiological sensors. The PhD will have to study innovative approaches and software for sensor analysis and skill assessment.

Candidates must have a Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Biomedical Engineering, Medical Informatics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline. We expect experience in Signal or Image Analysis, Machine Learning as well as very good mathematical and excellent programming skills (e.g., C++, Java). Candidates should be highly motivated and interested in interdisciplinary research.
